Total of 5,135 enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira were established while 3,215 ceased operations
The Regional Statistics Directorate of Madeira (DREM) releases today the final data on the demography of enterprises headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) for the period 2017-2022, categorised by sector according to the Classification of Economic Activities (CAE-rev.3) and legal form. This information originates from the Integrated Business Accounts System (SCIE) of Statistics Portugal (INE).
In 2022, there were 5,135 enterprises headquartered in the ARM (+16.0% compared to 2021), with 15 of them belonging to the financial sector and 5,120 to the non-financial sector. Of the total, approximately three out of every four were sole proprietorships, and one out of every four were companies. The establishment of sole proprietorships saw an increase of +23.7% compared to 2021, while companies decreased by 4.5% compared to 2021.
The proportion of surviving enterprises one year after establishment stood at 76.3% (+1.0 percentage points compared to 2021). The survival rate of enterprises (90.3%) continues to be much higher than that of sole proprietorships (82.1%) when observing survival rates 1 and 2 years after establishment, respectively. It is estimated that the number of closures reached 3,215 enterprises, marking a growth of 5.2% compared to the previous year.
76.4% of non-financial enterprises established in 2021 remained active in 2022
In 2022, 5,120 enterprises were established in the ARM, up by 753 (+17.2%) over the previous year and up by 1,619 (+46.2%) compared to 2020. Nationally, there was a 9.5% increase in the creation of non-financial enterprises compared to 2021. Enterprises that commenced operations in 2022 created 5,708 jobs and generated 710.5 million euros in turnover (+12.0% and +782.0% compared to 2021, respectively). The employment creation rate in enterprises, calculated as the quotient between the personnel employed at establishments and the total personnel employed, was 6.2% in 2022, higher than the previous year by 0.3 percentage points. The birth rate of non-financial enterprises headquartered in the ARM was 16.0%, higher than that of 2021 (14.7%).
Regarding enterprise survival, it is noteworthy that 76.4% of enterprises born in 2021 remained active in 2022. For those born in 2020, this ratio was 59.5%. In 2022, it is estimated that 3,196 enterprises ceased operations (+5.8% compared to 2021), leading to the loss of 3,644 (-2.0%) jobs and a decrease of 55.1 million euros in turnover (-11.0%), respectively. In 2022, the job loss rate, calculated as the quotient between the personnel affected by closures and the total personnel employed, was 4.0%, -0.4 percentage points compared to the previous year. That year, the mortality rate was 10.0%, lower than the previous year (10.2%). The mortality rate of sole proprietorships (12.3%) was also much higher than that of companies (5.6%).

In 2022, there were 132 high-growth companies (+7.3% compared to 2021), accounting for 11.1% (10.7% nationally) of the total number of non-financial companies with 10 or more employees in the ARM, responsible for 21.7% of employment, 20.1% of turnover, and 21.4% of generated gross value added (GVA). Nationally, these figures were 16.2%, 12.6%, and 14.4%, respectively.
These companies employed 10,297 persons (+27.6% compared to 2021 and +34.9% compared to 2020), their turnover reached 1,049.7 million euros (+30.5% and +70.2%), and they generated a GVA of 381.4 million euros (+23.3% and +93.7%).
The number of young high-growth non-financial companies, referred to as "gazelles", increased from 10 to 16 in 2022. In terms of employment, there was an increase of 185 employees, totalling 873 in 2022. Turnover saw a 21.7% increase, reaching 56.8 million euros. The 16 "gazelle" enterprises in the ARM had a GVA of 31.6 million euros in 2022, up +32.4% from 2021.
