[NOTE: In this edition, data for the 4th quarter of 2025 relating to the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) are released. It should be noted, however, that DREM continues to publish an aggregate covering hotels, rural tourism accommodation and all local accommodation establishments, regardless of bed capacity. By contrast, Statistics Portugal (INE), in its dissemination, excludes local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 beds. Consequently, in this release, in the “Em Foco” and in the tables published by DREM, the overall totals for guests and overnight stays are higher than those published by INE. As regards occupancy rates, rooms, revenue and personnel costs, the figures coincide with those released by INE, since their calculation excludes local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 beds.]
In the 4th quarter of 2025
Overnight stays in local accommodation increased by 18.6%, well above the 6.7% growth recorded for total tourist accommodation
Summary
In the 4th quarter of 2025, considering all accommodation establishments (tourist accommodation, holiday camps and youth hostels) in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM), 563.1 thousand guests and more than 2.9 million overnight stays were recorded, corresponding to increases of 8.0% and 6.7%, respectively, compared with the same quarter of the previous year. In cumulative terms for 2025, overnight stays and guests recorded even higher increases, of 9.3% and 8.4%, respectively.
The average length of stay across all tourist accommodation establishments stood at 4.66 nights in the 4th quarter of 2025, a figure broadly similar to that recorded in the 4th quarter of 2024 (4.65 nights). This stability mainly reflects the offsetting effect between the decline observed in the foreign market (5.01 nights; -0.7%) and the increase recorded in the domestic market (3.43 nights; +5.2%). In 2025, the average length of stay decreased by 0.6% compared with the previous year, a reduction influenced by the decline in the average stay of non-residents (-1.8%), since residents in Portugal recorded an increase of 10.6%.
In the 4th quarter of 2025, tourist accommodation outperformed the overall accommodation sector, accounting for almost all tourism activity: 99.7% of total guest arrivals and overnight stays.
During this quarter, holiday camps and youth hostels recorded 1 958 guest arrivals (0.3% of the total; -22.7% compared with the same quarter of the previous year), generating 7 577 overnight stays (0.3%; +2.9%) and an average stay of 3.45 nights (+24.0% compared with the 4th quarter of 2024).
In cumulative terms for 2025, a decrease was observed in the number of guest arrivals (-2.3% compared with 2024), while overnight stays increased (+2.0% compared with 2024). The average length of stay, in turn, recorded a positive change of 2.6% compared with the previous year.
Tourist accommodation
In the 4th quarter of 2025, tourist accommodation recorded 561.1 thousand guest arrivals, generating more than 2.9 million overnight stays, corresponding to positive year-on-year changes of 8.1% and 6.7%, respectively. It should be noted that, excluding local accommodation establishments with fewer than 10 beds, overnight stays in tourist accommodation increased by 2.0% compared with the 4th quarter of 2024, a higher change than that recorded at the national level (+1.9%).
During this quarter, the hotel sector accounted for 68.0% of overnight stays (around 2.0 million), recording a year-on-year increase of 2.3%. Local accommodation represented 29.8% of the total and increased by 18.6%, while rural tourism accommodation, with a share of 2.2%, grew by 3.3%. By type of establishment, the largest increases were observed in 4-star apartment hotels (+17.2%) and in “Lodging houses and Quintas da Madeira” (+16.2%).
In the reference quarter, the average length of stay in tourist accommodation remained unchanged compared with the previous year, standing at 4.66 nights. The highest values continued to be recorded in hotels (4.71 nights) and local accommodation (4.63 nights), while rural tourism accommodation registered the lowest average stay (3.75 nights). Within the hotel sector, 5-star apartment hotels recorded the highest average stay, reaching 6.13 nights in the reference period (-3.1% compared with the 4th quarter of 2024), closely followed by tourist villages, with 6.00 nights (-2.9% compared with the same quarter).
In the 4th quarter of 2025, the ARM recorded 432.8 thousand guest arrivals from foreign markets (non-residents), generating more than 2.4 million overnight stays, corresponding to increases of 7.7% and 5.1%, respectively, compared with the same period of 2024. The region showing the highest dependence on foreign markets in terms of overnight stays (84.0% of the total) was the ARM, followed by Algarve (82.1%) and Grande Lisboa (79.0%). Conversely, overnight stays by non-residents accounted for a smaller share in the regional totals of Centro and Alentejo (28.0% and 35.6%, respectively).
Among the four main foreign source markets, only the French market recorded a decrease in overnight stays compared with the same quarter of the previous year (-4.6%), while the German (+2.6%), British (+0.9%) and Polish (+6.7%) markets evolved positively. The market of residents in Portugal (16.4% of the total) recorded an even more significant positive change, of 15.2%. It should also be highlighted that these five main markets accounted for more than half of overnight stays (67.2%) in the 4th quarter of 2025. In cumulative terms for 2025, the two main source markets evolved in opposite directions: Germany recorded growth of 0.9%, while the United Kingdom registered a decrease of 1.2%.
At the municipal level, Câmara de Lobos, Ponta do Sol and Santa Cruz stood out as the municipalities showing the greatest dependence on foreign markets (non-residents) in terms of overnight stays, with 90.5%, 90.2% and 89.0%, respectively. Porto Santo, in turn, stood out for recording the highest proportion of overnight stays by residents in Portugal, representing 59.5% of the total in the 4th quarter of 2025.

Among the Region’s eleven municipalities, Ribeira Brava also stood out, recording a 29.1% increase in overnight stays compared with the 4th quarter of 2024. This growth was driven by a 57.5% increase in the market of residents in Portugal and a 24.1% increase in the market of non-residents.
In the quarter under analysis, the net bed occupancy rate in tourist accommodation establishments in the Region stood at 62.6%, corresponding to an increase of 0.2 percentage points (pp) compared with the same period of 2024 (62.4%). The room occupancy rate reached 72.4%, slightly above the 72.3% recorded in the 4th quarter of 2024. According to data provided by the Ports Administration of the ARM, 326 270 passengers in transit were recorded in the 147 cruise ships docking at the ARM ports during the 4th quarter of 2025. Compared with the same period of the previous year, there were 8 fewer stopovers, while the number of passengers in transit decreased by 1.4%.
Nevertheless, this decline did not prevent cumulative annual growth in 2025 compared with 2024, which stood at 1.8%, reaching a record figure of 729.8 thousand passengers in transit.
