For 2023 DREM releases Culture Indicators

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) makes available on its website the updated Time Series of Culture, Sport, and Recreation, with the final data for all indicators for 2023.

Museums: Number of visitors increased by 5.7% compared to 2022

In 2023, 20 museums in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) met the eligibility criteria for the Museum Survey (two more than in 2022), holding around 117.8 thousand items in their collections (a 4.1% increase). Approximately 357.7 thousand visitors were recorded, marking a 5.7% increase compared to 2022, of which 66.2% were foreigners (236.7 thousand) and 10.6% were visitors from school groups (38.0 thousand).

Exhibitions, authors, and works decreased in 2023

In 2023, the 36 art galleries and other temporary exhibition spaces in operation in the ARM hosted 267 exhibitions, 7 fewer than the previous year. The number of represented authors, 1 317, decreased by 63.0% (3 562 in 2022), with 6 158 works displayed, which represented a decrease of 12.5% in the number of works exhibited compared to the previous year (7 035 works in 2022).

Periodical publications fell by 5.5% compared to 2022

In 2023, 12 periodical publications were recorded in the ARM (one fewer than in 2022), of which 5 were newspapers and 7 were magazines. Regarding the diffusion medium, 9 of the publications were distributed in both "paper and electronic" formats, 2 were only in "paper," and 1 was only "electronic."

The total circulation was about 3.4 million, of which 98.2% were newspapers. The proportion of free circulation for periodical publications was 4.0%.

During this period, 782 editions of newspapers and 28 editions of magazines were printed, totalling 810 printed editions. The total print circulation was approximately 4.3 million (4.2 million newspapers and 72.1 thousand magazines), a decrease of 5.5% compared to 2022.

Cinema and box office revenues increased

According to data from the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual (ICA), in 2023, there were a total of 4 cinemas in the Region, with 14 screens and a seating capacity of 3 049 places.

A total of 14 105 cinema sessions were held in the ARM, attended by 215.4 thousand spectators, generating approximately 1.2 million euros in revenue. Compared to 2022, there was an 8.9% increase in the number of sessions, a 37.2% increase in spectators, and a 42.3% increase in box office revenues. The occupancy rate was 7.0%, higher than the previous year’s 6.0%.

Fewer live shows, but more venues, spectators, and revenues

Regarding performance venues, in 2023, RAM had 18 venues, 1 more than in 2021, consisting of 24 halls and employing 182 workers (+15 compared to 2021). The seating capacity decreased by 27.1%, totalling 8 349 seats, 5 469 of which were seated, with an average capacity of 347.9 seats per hall.

As for live performances, 1 208 sessions were held in 2023, with a total of 255.7 thousand spectators, 69.6 thousand of whom paid for tickets, generating 970 thousand euros in revenue. Compared to the previous year, there was a decrease in the number of sessions (-11.8%), but an increase in spectators (+7.7%), tickets sold (+6.9%), and box office revenues (+8.6%). The average ticket price for all live performances was 13.9 euros (13.7 euros the previous year).

Region maintained the number of cultural properties

In 2023, there were 180 classified cultural properties in the ARM, the same number as the previous year, of which 173 were monuments and 7 were sets. According to the protection category, 113 of the Region's properties (62.8%) were of municipal interest, 60 were of public interest (33.3%), and 7 were national monuments (3.9%). The classified properties in the Region represent 3.8% of those existing nationally.

In the referenced year, there were 6 active zoos, botanical gardens, and aquariums in the ARM, 1 more than in 2022.

Municipal expenditure on culture and sport increased

In 2023, expenses on cultural, creative and sports activities by Municipalities amounted to 15.5 million euros, an increase of 3.6 million (+29.9%) compared to the previous year. This increase was mainly due to a 270.0% increase in capital expenditures (1.8 million euros) and a 31.6% increase in other current expenditures (10.6 million euros), which accounted for 68.4% of total spending on culture and sports. It is worth noting that personnel expenditures, which represented 20.1% of total spending on culture and sports, decreased by 8.4% compared to the previous year. The share of culture and sports spending in total municipal expenses was 5.9%, an increase of 0.4 percentage points compared to 2022.

During this period, 72.9% of the total spending on culture and sports was directed towards cultural and creative activities (approximately 11.3 million euros), with the remaining 27.1% going to sports activities and equipment (approximately 4.2 million euros). Compared to the previous year, cultural activities saw their expenses increase by 29.2% while spending on sports activities and equipment rose by 31.9%. The share of spending on cultural and creative activities and sports activities and equipment in total municipal expenses was 4.3% and 1.6%, respectively.

By domains, in the case of cultural and creative activities expenses, the most notable were those related to "Performing Arts" (4.6 million euros) and "Interdisciplinary Activities" (3.0 million euros), which accounted for 40.9% and 26.5% of total expenses in this domain, followed by expenses related to "Cultural Heritage" with a share of 12.7% (1.4 million euros) of total expenses.

In the case of sports activities and equipment expenses, the most notable were those related to "Sports Associations," which accounted for 44.3% of total sports expenses (1.9 million euros) and "Construction and maintenance of other sports equipment (outdoor or with simple covering)," which represented 25.2% (1.1 million euros).

In 2023, municipal spending on cultural and recreational activities per capita was 44.3 euros, an increase of 9.7 euros (+28.0%) compared to 2022. Municipal spending on sports activities and equipment per capita was 16.5 euros, a 3.9 euros growth compared to the previous year (+31.0%).
