In the 1st half of 2025

Region’s Trade Balance with foreign countries recorded a surplus of 111.6 million euros

According to preliminary data for the 1st half of 2025, the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM) recorded a trade surplus of 111.6 million euros in its transactions with foreign countries. This figure is significantly higher than that observed in the same period of the previous year (20.2 million euros). This translates into a coverage rate of imports by exports of 180.9%, compared to 113.1% in the first half of 2024.

Comercio Internacional 2t25 EN

In the period under review, total exports by enterprises headquartered in the ARM amounted to approximately 249.5 million euros, representing an increase of 43.3% compared to the 1st half of 2024. Conversely, imports did not exceed 138.0 million euros, reflecting a year-on-year decrease of 10.4%. In the 1st half of 2025, the majority of exports were directed to non-EU countries (50.1% of the total), whereas imports remained predominantly sourced from European Union countries (79.4%).

Final 2024 data from the International Trade Statistics are now available

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) is today releasing the main final results of the International Trade Statistics for the year 2024. More detailed information, along with the updated historical time series (1976–2024), will be published in September.

Madeira records a positive trade balance with foreign countries for the eighth consecutive year

According to the final 2024 data on International Trade in Goods, the Region recorded a trade surplus of approximately 66.3 million euros, lower than that of the previous year, when the trade balance stood at 77.4 million euros.

An analysis by flow type shows that exports increased by 4.9% overall in 2024, reaching 367.7 million euros, an increase of 17.2 million euros compared to the previous year.

This growth in exports was primarily driven by increased transactions with Intra-EU countries, which amounted to 162.4 million euros in 2024, compared to 130.4 million euros in 2023. Trade in goods with Extra-EU countries decreased from 220.1 million euros in 2023 to 205.4 million euros in 2024.

Imports totalled approximately 301.4 million euros in 2024, marking an increase of 10.4% or 28.3 million euros compared to the previous year.

This significant rise in imports was largely attributable to transactions with EU member states, which amounted to 249.7 million euros in 2024, 38.1 million euros more than in 2023. In contrast, imports from non-EU countries declined from 61.5 million euros in 2023 to 51.8 million euros in 2024.

The release of the final 2024 data led to a revision of export and import flows and the corresponding trade balance in goods. Compared to the provisional figures published in May 2025, exports were revised upwards by 2.8 million euros, imports by 21.6 million euros, and the balance downwards by 18.8 million euros.
