In the fourth quarter of 2024

Average gross monthly earnings per worker increased by 4.6% year-on-year, with the annual average growing by 6.0% to 1,526 euros

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) released the provisional figures for the fourth quarter of 2024 and the year 2024 regarding the average monthly earnings per worker, for entities headquartered in the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ARM). It should be noted that these statistics are provided to DREM by Statistics Portugal (INE) and are prepared based on information from the Monthly Remuneration Declaration sent by enterprises to Social Security (DMR/SS), obtained by INE under a protocol signed with the Social Security Information Technology Institute, I.P., and from the Contribution Report of subscribers to the Caixa Geral de Aposentações (RC/CGA). Alongside this publication, a series with the Regional Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Wage (RGMMW) since 1974, is also published.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the average total gross monthly earnings per worker (per job position) increased by 4.6% compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 1,683 euros. Both regular earnings and base earnings recorded increases of 5.0% and 5.1%, reaching values of 1,247 and 1,200 euros, respectively.

In real terms, adjusted for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) change in the Region, the total average earnings per worker increased by 1.1%, regular earnings rose by 1.5% and base earnings increased by 1.6%.

These results encompass 107.2 thousand job positions (+4.0% compared to the same period last year), including beneficiaries of Social Security and subscribers of the Caixa Geral de Aposentações of entities headquartered in the ARM.

Year-on-year, it stands out the increases in total earnings observed in "Agriculture, forestry and fishing" (section A) and “Arts, entertainment and recreation” (section R), both with a change of +10.8%, in “Administrative and support service activities” (section N; +8.9%), in "Manufacturing industry with low industrial technology" (+8.1%), in enterprises with less than 10 workers (1 to 4 workers; +7.6% and 5 to 9 workers; +7.5%), in private sector (5.5%) and in the of sector of mainly non-tradable market goods and services (+5.3%).

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the average total gross monthly earnings per worker in the Region was 1 683 euros, which is 5.3% below the national average, which stood at 1,777 euros. The year-on-year change, in nominal terms, in the Country, was 5.9% (1 678 euros in December 2023) and, in real terms, was 3.8%. Similarly to the Region, at the national level, "Electricity, gas, steam, hot and cold water, and air conditioning" (section D) was the activity that presented the highest total gross earnings in December 2024 (4 150 euros in the ARM and 3 800 euros in the Country). Enterprises in the 250 to 499 worker brackets were the ones in the ARM that recorded the highest value in this indicator, 2 081 euros whereas, in the country, enterprises with 500 or more worker brackets received 2,149 euros.

In ARM, the average total gross monthly earnings per worker in the private sector (5.5%) showed year-on-year changes higher than those in the Public Administration sector (+4.8%). At the national level, the opposite trend was observed, with positive year-on-year changes of 5.5% in the private sector and 7.8% in the public sector.

Regarding the year 2024, provisional figures show that the average total gross monthly earnings per worker increased by 6.0% to 1,526 euros. Its regular component grew by 5.7% to 1,251 euros, while the base earnings rose by 5.9% to 1,205 euros. The changes in real terms were +2.6%, +2.3%, and +2.5%, respectively.
Remuneracao EN
Regional Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Wage in 2025 with a nominal increase of 7.65% compared to 2024

The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) releases today a time series on the evolution of the Regional Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Wage (RGMMW) since 1974, the year in which the National Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Wage (NGMMW) was established, in collaboration with the Regional Directorate of Labour. The series presents both nominal and real changes (adjusted for inflation) underlying the various updates, as well as the increases in the RGMMW compared to the NGMMW, which have been in place since 1987 (inclusive).

Between 1978 and 1989, three different minimum wages existed depending on the sector of activity: "Non-agricultural activities excluding domestic service", "Agriculture, forestry, and livestock activities", and "Domestic service". On 1st July 1989, a new adjustment was made, integrating rural workers into the first group, which was designated as the general scheme. The distinction of the RMW for domestic service was abolished from 2004 onwards.

In 2025, the Regional Guaranteed Minimum Monthly Wage was set at 915 euros, representing a 7.65% increase compared to the previous year. Compared to the NGMMW (870 euros in 2025), the RGMMW shows a positive differential of 5.17%.
